If you went to UCONN in Storrs, you are probably familiar with The Bidwell Tavern in Coventry, the old (really old) building and the never-enough parking. Rocks and Wings on Wednesday nights (a tavern of wings and a bucket of Rolling Rock ponies) was a staple for me and my roommates, even a couple of years past graduation. Read the rest of this entry »

Free Stuff in Hartford
19 05 2009So somehow I got on this email of “Free Hartford.” I’m going to go ahead and blame my boss, but some of it is actually pretty good. It’s basically a list of free stuff to do in the area. I’d rather clip my cat’s claws than go to a lot of it…so, I’m weeding it out for you. You’re welcome.

Free to Good Home
15 05 2009
I think I posted the Rowland Award nominees a bit prematurely, because we have a new, very serious contender.
SOUTH WINDSOR — – A 20-year-old who posted an ad on the Internet giving away a 5-year-old boy was charged with breach of peace. Read the rest of this entry »

“Low Tide & Rotten Garbage”: Another Montauk Monster Sighting
14 05 2009
Montauk Monster Strikes Again
Another bloated carcass seems to have washed up along the Long Island Sound beaches…this time on the North Fork of Long Island. You’re safe for now, Nutmeggers. This time though, the beach-goers who found it, did not just leave it there to be carted away by shadowy figures from Plum Island. Nope, they’ve got it in a cooler, packed in ice. Holy Narcolepsy!
8 05 2009From The Hartford Advocate’s Crime & Punishment report:
Cuckoo for Catalytic Converters
Back in October of 2008, Gary Gaudet tried to saw the catalytic converter off a car at A&M Auto in East Hartford and, in the process, fell asleep. Then, last week, the 51-year-old tried stealing another catalytic converter, this time at Asian Motors, one quarter-mile away from the previous attempt on Tolland Street. He fell asleep again, this time forever. While Gaudet hacksawed, the Ford Windstar minivan slipped off the jack and landed on his face and chest, killing him, East Hartford police believe. The owner of Asian Motors called police after finding Gaudet under the van at 9:28 a.m. on April 30. The Medical Examiners Office in Farmington informed the Advocate that the cause of death was compression and asphyxia.

Kyle King, You’re My Hero
8 05 2009In case you don’t watch tabloid news shows, or, as I do, “The Soup” I’ll tell you all about Kyle King.
He was arrested after jumping on stage at a Britney Spears concert at Mohegan Sun and causing the songstress with a borderline personality and lots of fake hair to loose her effing mind! The best part was, Spears was dressed as a police officer, and even had a nightstick in her hand, but still started dancing around like a mouse had just scurried over her toes when the 20-year-old King jumped up on stage. Coolest Connecticut Principal Ever
8 05 2009East Beat, how do I love thee, let me counts the ways?
1. You can always be counted on to produce at least one stripper-related story a month
2. Um….
Never mind, this counting thing is for suckers…and people who don’t live in towns where school principals arrange drug deals. Just read this: Read the rest of this entry »

The Cat’s Meow: Hartford Young Professionals Doing Some Good
4 05 2009One of my biggest complaints about Hartford is the lack of philanthropy among young professionals (YP = ages 25-40). In many similar sized cities, you see some incredibly successful young professional events raising hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I haven’t seen too much success in Hartford. That could all be changing, though. Read the rest of this entry »
