They’re back! Sort of. Last Saturday the former Hartford Wolfpack officially made the transition to the Connecticut Whale in front of a raucous 13,000+ fans at the XL Center. Donning an all green uniform, the Whale defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (whatever those are) 3-2 which certainly made the home town crowd happy.
More than just the game, the atmosphere for the game was probably the bigger story. It felt like 1996 all over again with people crowding downtown bars, obnoxious fans blowing into those annoying horns and just a general buzz in the arena about the return of something similar to the old Hartford Whalers. “Brass Bonanza” was played throughout the night much to the delight of anyone who dug the Whalers from a few decades ago. It was also played after the game winning goal, so suck on that, Sound Tigers!
Cynics would see that jump in attendance and say “Yeah, I bet no one goes to their second game as the Whale!” Well, those cynics would be right. The next night a mere 3,000+ fans showed up to see the Whale take on Adirondack, which the Whale won 3-0. Hopefully that’s not a sign of things to come.
Owner Howard Baldwin has said that he’s expecting to see fluctuations in attendance but geez, a flux of 10,000 people? That’s a lot. Get out there and see the darnn games! It’s cold out, you’ve got nothing else to do.
Anyway, the CT Whale jersey would make a great gift for anyone that’s a sports fan in your life! They’re green and will be sure to draw high fives from complete strangers.
