A Fool for a Client

When I clicked on the Hartford Courant’s story about the arrest of West Hartford’s Town Councilman Rob Durbin, I had hoped to read something really juicy. At The CuT, when any of us see “Town Councilman Arrested” our eyes widen, and our pulses quicken.

No, we don’t particularly enjoy celebrating anyone’s misfortune…well, yes , yes we do…but only when it’s truly ridiculous. So we were hoping this man had done something hilarious. Perhaps, Mr. Durbin was arrested for indecent exposure when, walking out to fetch his morning paper, the wind kicked up and blew open his bath-robe as a school bus drove past. Or perhaps, maybe, he was caught in a Craigslist prostitution sting.

What actually happened reads like a disappointing play on an old “Ambulance-chasing Attorney” joke. Hartford Courant reports:

WEST HARTFORD — Police arrested Town Councilman Rob Durbin on Tuesday after he allegedly followed police officers responding to a domestic dispute and then persistently offered free legal aid to the residents involved.

Police said they made repeated requests to Durbin, a Democrat and member of the town’s public safety committee, not to interfere. Durbin told them he was there to provide pro bono legal aid to the residents.

The residents then told police that they did not know Durbin or summon him for legal aid.

Officers arrested Durbin and charged him with interfering with an officer and first-degree criminal trespass. He was released on a $2,500 non-surety bond.

Now,  the Anti-Couric and I have both learned from separate incidents that domestic disputes typically end in the arrest of one or both parties. Unless, like in my case, the person making the report about you lies to police in the first place. (Circumstances were a little different in the Anti-Couric’s case, but because it’s still pending litigation, we can’t talk about it.) So whoever was involved in the domestic dispute that the West Hartford Police had originally set out to investigate must have breathed a sigh of relief when this moron showed up to  offer his pro-bono legal aid, and was in turn arrested… but The Courant goes on to report:

“A resident at the house, Claudia Daines, 46, was also arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.”

No word yet on whether or not Mr. Durbin will be acting as his own Attorney… or anyone else’s.
