All About: Sterling

Population: 3,099

County: Windham

Size: 27.3 sq mi

History: The CT General Assembly created Sterling by cutting down the size of Voluntown in 1794. Word is the people of Voluntown are still pissed and don’t even recognize the name Sterling (I made that part up because there’s really no interesting historical facts about Sterling… its website lists when they got the first post office under history. How exciting!) It hugs the border of Rhode Island, so at least they’re on the right side of that border.

Something Weird: Two things 1) In 2009, there was a cow born in this town with a white cross on his head. It created something of a buzz in the news cycle but cows with crosses are really not that uncommon 2) Sterling is home to a company, Detotec, that makes coils for explosives. I’ve been there and it’s set way off the road which is probably a good thing. So if you ever hear a giant explosion while visiting (as if you’ll ever have a reason to do that), that might be the reason.
